Surveys by the Pew institute and Time magazine found that 4 in 10 Americans say marriage is no longer needed in today's society.
A new report shows more and more Americans believe marriage has become obsolete.
Non-profit Pew Research Center and Time magazine said Thursday, according to the survey, nearly four in 10 Americans - or about 39 percent - said marriage is no longer needed in American society today.
Time magazine added that when his party held a similar survey in 1978 with the question of whether marriage is outdated institution?, Only 28 percent of respondents who answered yes.
The report also found that poorer Americans tend not to get married than those who were college educated and earn well, although the marriage rate declined in all socio-economic groups in America.
The researchers also said the change in attitudes toward marriage have an impact on American families, with nearly one of every three children who live with single parents or with parents who are not married.
However, Americans who were respondents in the survey also said that they still remain more optimistic about the future of marriage and family in America, compared to the future of the economy or the American educational system.
